How Long Does the SPass Application Take?

Few days ago, I told you guys about the renewal of my EP, which was rejected by MOM.  So, my employer sent an appeal to the Ministry if they can reconsider my application.

We've waited for about 3 weeks and finally we received a letter from the Ministry of Manpower.  I regret to inform you guys that my Employment Pass (EP) appeal has been rejected.

What Did We Do After the Rejection?
In addition, to make the situation worse, is that my EP is going to expire for the next 7 days! Well, life is really challenging and there's no other option but to go on with it.  This doesn't affect me big time since we can still apply for the SPass.  But what did we do next once we received the rejection letter?

My boss, called the Ministry of Manpower and requested a letter to extend my permit to work in Singapore.  The next day, a letter was received stating that I can still stay and work here in Singapore for the next 30 days and the letter together with my expired pass should be shown to any government body once they requested it.

What's the Step to Get the SPass?
Quite a relief, I can still work in Singapore for the next 30 days, but I still need to have a long term pass.  My boss sent all my requirements (Degree Certificate, TOR and also my wife's Diploma and TOR).  The third requirement is quite surprising, but we applied for the SPass anyway.

Two working days later, my boss sent me an SMS and informed me that my SPass application was approved.  A smile on my face is the obvious expression after reading the text.   Relieved and motivated, I hurried to the office and asked my boss for the next step.

Medical Exam Taken
Each renewal or new application of a pass requires a medical examination from a clinic or hospital in Singapore. This examination includes the Chest X-Ray (PTB test) and HIV Test.

The IPA (In-Principal Approval) from MOM includes a medical form, which the applicant should bring along  to the doctor and have it signed, this is the proof that the applicant is fit enough to work.

The medical examination includes the physical and a Chest X-ray, but HIV was not included at this time.  On the previous year, they required me for the HIV test and lucky that I have a negative result. Wew!!!

The Chest X-Ray and the physical examination is quite fast.  It took me 2 days to get the result at the clinic, personally.

Next Step After the Medical Examination?
I handed the result and the IPA to my boss and she sent it to MOM online.  A letter from MOM came in the next day and it was the letter of issuance for my SPass.  It stated that I have to get the SPass Identification Card at the Work Pass Services Center (WPSC).

Where is the WPSC?
The Work Pass Services Center (WPSC) is located at:

Tanjong Pagar Complex, 7 Keppel Rd. #02-06, Singapore.

Click this link to go to the map of Tanjong Pagar Complex.

The nearest MRT is the Tanjong Pagar (EW15) but you have to walk around 10-15 mins to the WPSC.

What is the Total Timeline of the SPass Application?
Online Key-in               :  1 working day
SPass IPA result           :  2 working days
Medical Exam               :  3 working days
Pick Up (Spass IC)      :   4 working days
Total days :  10 working days

Please take note:  This is my timeline, it may vary depending on the applicant's status.

Hope that your Spass will be approved SOON! Please leave a comment below if you do...

    1. No it's not, just happens to be the clinic that was available at that time and the Xray clinic is also there. I went to Jurong Point Basement 1A (B1A). This is in the upper basement, front of the Japanese restaurant.

      How to go there:
From MRT>>Go inside Jurong Point>>turn right and go down to the basement>>you can see SONY>>go straight until you see a Japanese restaurant>>in fron of it, an excalator>>go up and see all the clinics there>>then choose.

    2. Hi Ben, that was awesome info! How much did it all cost you (medical exam + x-ray + hiv)? And which medical centre exactly did you take those stuff? I'm currently still outside Singapore and never been to Jurong area before. Would you explain further about it? Thanks so much!

    3. Hi Lilla, as long as the company has no accredited hospital or clinic, you can have your Medical Exam at any clinic or hospital nearest to you.

The cost of Medical is around S$45- S$60. It depends on the clinic/hospital. Don't worry because your employer should pay for this 100% or you can claim it with your receipt to them.

    1. As long as your resume has no false statements, no need to worry.

Friendly Tip: Do not allow your agent to alter your resume/credentials with false data. Singapore Law is tough!

  4. Hi Ben, My SPASS was rejected last January 27 due to insufficient quota but the company made an appeal 2 days later. What are the chances that it will be approved? Can a company made an appeal about quota problem.

    1. If the problem is quota, then, they have to remove one of their SPass employee just to let you in. If they are willing to do that for you, you'll be the talented or the luckiest guy in Singapore.

  5. Hi! I am on work permit and I want to apply for S pass. Does it mean that I have a higher chance of approval since I have been working for 6 years and graduated from a Spore institute with a diploma?
    Thank you Ben!!!

    1. I can say that you have 50% chance of having an SPass, but another 50% will be based on the company's quota of SPass holders. In Singapore, each company holds a number of SPass holders, ex: for SME's, I was informed that it would be 5:1...there should be 5 (Singaporean,PR, EPass) employees so they can get 1 Spass.

  6. Hello Ben,

I am currently holding an S-Pass, and it is my 7th day at work but I don't like my working environment. There is no proper training and my Seniors are bullies. My question is if my employer or I decides to leave the company (Which my S-Pass will be cancelled) will that make my record at MOM look bad? Or if I get lucky and be hired with another company will that slim my chances of getting approved again with an S-Pass?.. Thank you

    1. Hi Amit, Spass is based on the workers credentials, salary and the company's quota. As far as I know, for Small Medium Enterprise (SME) needs 4-5 Singaporean or PR to have 1 SPass worker.

  9. Hi Ben,

Does your employer apply for the spass or you can do it yourself?
    Thanks

    1. They should apply the Pass for you. You only need to go to the Employment Pass office once approved.

  10. Hi. For my case, the medical is the first step. Is this ok? And also until now the medical result havent come to the employer. Its been 12 days already (8 working days)

    1. Hi, I don't think this is possible because you have to submit a form to the Doctor in order for him to perform the Medical Exam. This form comes together with the IPA. The step that you take was quite different and might as well check with your employer or MOM.

  13. Hi to all!

I just want to ask whether anyone of you knows how long the SPass appeal takes? My sister's SPass application got rejected 2 working days after the company applied online. Now, the company said they will file an appeal.

I've search thru MOM website and found out that the appeal takes AT LEAST 3 weeks. This is a bit too long for our schedule because my sister's social visit pass will expire in just over 3 weeks from now (whichin this case would only give us a few days before her visit pass expires if the appeal would really take at least 3 weeks).

We still have other options like applying for visit pass extension or exiting to Malaysia or Indonesia but as much as possible, we do not prefer these options because I've learned that the Singapore Immigrations is quite strict nowadays.

Now my question is, does anyone of you know of any case that the SPass appeal got approved/rejected in less than 3 weeks? I just want to have a little bit of hope in our current situation.

    Thanks a lot in advance!
