Extension of Short Term Visit Pass / Tourist Visa

If your Short Term Visit Pass is due for expiration and you need to extend it, you have to apply for an extension at the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) in Singapore.

There are two purposes which you can extend your visa.  It's either for Social Purposes or Seeking Medical Treatment.  Take note that this extension is for ICA approval and consideration, it may not be approved at all times.

If you want to extend your Short Term Visit Pass for Social Purposes, you can visit the link HERE...

For Seeking Medical Treatment Purposes, click the link HERE...

  1. Hi Ben,

Can you extend a short term pass without a local sponsor? My girlfriend is working here for almost 4 years now but she didn't apply as a PR. I'm not sure if she will qualify as a local sponsor. Do you have any suggestions on how I can extend my stay here in singapore. I'm almost 2 weeks here now and I only have 10 weekdays left in my short term pass. By the way, I find your posts very useful. Keep it up!

    Thanks!

  2. You will need a local sponsor if you intend to extend to 89days or you are a citizen of these countries...•Afghanistan•Egypt•Jordan• Morocco•Somalia•Tunisia•Algeria•Iran•Lebanon•Pakistan•Sudan•Yemen•Bangladesh•Iraq•Libya•Saudi Arabia•Syria•Holders of Palestinian Authority Passport...

This is the only way to extend your stay in Singapore. If not, you need to exit the country. hope this helps...

    1. Hi Ben, looking for confirmation please ! came across this, I have lost my current job in singapore, i have a 30 days short visit pass issued which expires on the 8th August, I have a preplanned bali trip on 28 july and returning to singapore on 7 august, I am currently looking for a job and have a few interviews scheduled in the next 2 weeks.. My life is here with a condo etc so no plans on leaving and I am sure I will get a new job pretty soon..

question is, when i return to singapore will they give me the 30 days if i say I am here as a tourist and traveling (I am a UK national) I will not have another flight ticket booked when I re enter Singapore (will say I am traveling to KL with the bus in a few weeks) OR should I go to the Extend website now and request the 1 month extension ?? your help is greatly appreciated.

    2. Hi, based on my friend's experience...He's an Spass holder but was not confirmed by his company due to poor performance.

He was given a 30 day visit pass, he tried to extend but rejected. So, he went to Batam, Indonesia with his girlfriend and came back to SG with a 30-day visit pass.

    3. Your extension will be useless because you will be exiting on 28July. Once you exit SG, any extension is good as complete.

You can try the extension a week before the expiration of your pass and cancel/postpone your trip once you are given 30 days. This move is good if your priority is securing a job, you can go wherever you want after that.

    4. Hi Ben,

I applied for a 90 day extension and my sister, who is a PR, is my sponsor. They required us to go to to the ICA office with the supporting documents. Are they going to ask me as to why I am extending my stay? If the answer is Yes, what's the best excuse? Because honestly, I'm here to look for work and I need more time and I'm pretty this is not a good excuse to extend my stay. Need your answer ASAP (We will be going to the ICA office tomorrow) Thank you a million times.

    6. Sorry, but your post is too urgent. I can only say that there's no problem of a 90 day extension, it clearly states here in this ICA statement:

"b) Click Extension up to 89 days link in the main menu if you wish to apply for extension up to 89 days from date of entry and fulfil the following criteria:-
      (i) You are a foreigner with family ties where your immediate family members are Singapore Citizen or Singapore Permanent Resident and you are able to furnish original supporting documentary evidence to establish relationship;"

It does not ask for the reason of extension.

  3. Okay, thanks for the reply Ben. What if I visit Malaysia for 1 day. Then go back here in Singapore. Will I automatically get a fresh 30 days stay here in Singapore? Or do i still need to request this in Immigration or probably mom? Say, I only have 5 weekdays left. Then I stayed in Malaysia for 1 day, maybe watch a movie and try some foods like what you did in johur. When I go back here in Singapore after a day (or can it be within the day?)can I already stay for another 33 days? Will I undergo interrogations, etc? Hope you can enlighten me here.

    Thanks again!

  4. Once you exit Singapore, you are considered disembarked. Once you go back to Singapore from Malaysia, your are now embarking to Singapore. Again, you will go through immigration processing(same as from the Philippines or any other country)as a tourist, which is due for the Visa Officer discretion.

My friends did this, they've been given 30 days...

  5. Thanks again for the prompt reply Ben. By the way, I visited the e-XTEND website and below are the stated conditions. It seems to me that if you are seeking for just 30 days extension, you don't need a local sponsor to apply online. My friend told me about this and he was able to get the extension without a local sponsor.

    ---- https://www.psi.gov.sg/NASApp/tmf/TMFServlet?action=PROCESS&gotoPage=PublicWelcomePage&page=MainWelcomePage ------

If you fulfill all the following conditions, you can submit an application online.

    a) You have not previously obtained an extension of stay on this trip
    b) You wish to extend your stay up to 89 days from date of entry to Singapore
    c) Your visit pass has a remaining validity of at least 2 working days from date of submission. (Note: Working days are from Monday to Saturday, excluding public holidays)
    d) You will not return to Singapore within 5 days from the departure date of your current trip

If you confirm that you fulfill all the above conditions and agree that you will not be seeking any (further) extension after this application, irrespective of the outcome, you may

    a) Click Extension up to 30 days link in the main menu if you wish to apply for extension up to 30 days from expiry of current visit pass
    b) Click Extension up to 89 days link in the main menu if you wish to apply for extension up to 89 days from date of entry and fulfill the following criteria:-
    (i) You are a foreigner with family ties where your immediate family members are Singapore Citizen or Singapore Permanent Resident and you are able to furnish original supporting documentary evidence to establish relationship; or
(ii) You are a foreigner who is seeking medical treatment in Singapore and are able to furnish original letter from a Singapore registered doctor to support your extension of stay.

Travellers who do not fulfill the above conditions would need to apply for an extension in person at the Visitor Services Centre (4th Storey), ICA Building.

  6. Here's important information to all Malaysians: There's an unwritten law that you can only visit Singapore on a short-term/social visit pass for a maximum of 60 days out of any 90-day period, after which you have to stay out for at least 30 days before you can come back into Singapore for another 60 days. This applies also for non-consecutive days, e.g. if you cross over back to Malaysia for a week and come back in again. As long as it accumulates to 60 days within 90 days. This law isn't shown anywhere on the ICA website, but the immigration officer at the airport will apply it to you all the same. It happened to me, and I only have a day left here when I just got back in last night. The only official proof online that I can find is via an article from 1998: http://www.mha.gov.sg/news_details.aspx?nid=MjM3-RXa1rP7PLTI%3D If you're already at this point like me, you can try to appeal for a (very) short extension at ICA where you need a local sponsor (a friend is allowed) but it's a lot of hassle and the chance is slim. Good luck!

  7. Hi Guys,

Is it safe that we exit Singapore through KL, we already extended our SVP and have been in Singapore for 2 months, our extension is about to expire after a week from now and our job offer/contract will only be processed after two-three weeks.. Please advise on when is the best time we exit singapore and when is the safest date to return to Singapore?..should it be after a week or two?..And would it be difficult?..there were rumors that some are not approved by SG immigration officer and was sent back to their home country..how true is this?..Thanks my friend!!Please help...

  8. Going to KL is safe. But, if you intend to come back in Singapore after a 2-month stay is almost impossible. This is a 50% to 50% chance of getting in. If you can get in, they will just give you an extension based on the date of your return ticket to your country.

Sorry to say this. But you need to try your luck.

    1. Hi Ben,

My extended Social Visit Pass will expire on Nov 14. I plan to go to KL on Nov 9 and spend a week there. If I come back here, will they (SG immigration) give me 30 days? or will they give me an extension based on my return ticket date (my return ticket date is Nov 16)? Or will it be better if a stayed in KL a little longer, like a month (while rebooking my return ticket from SG-Phil on a later date) and just come back here? (the reason for this whole ordeal is that I'm waiting for the result of my reappeal, God has been so kind to give me an employer who is more than willing to help me out in getting my work pass approved)

    2. Hi, you have to try your best this time. As what I've commented above this thread is that it's difficult to go back in and expect another 30-day visit pass. What you can do is to try. Just have a tour to Malaysia first for 5 days or a week, then come back to SG.

Sorry, it's all I can advise. If they won't allow, the most that you can lose is money and time, but your dreams will be untouched. Hoping for a positive result.

If I exit in Malaysia, and come back after 5 days will they give me another 1 month extension? What is the best way to address my problem?

    1. Sorry, ICA grants one time extension only or you need to exit for 30 days. Please feel free to browse some useful information above.

You can wait for your approved employment pass in Philippines, which is better than staying in Malaysia.

    2. Actually initially an IPA is issued first this doesn't mean that you're already granted a work permit. A few steps would be required before it would become official. The problem is, immigration officer in the phils doesn't accept this a reasonable excuse to go back in singapore. Eventhough you already have your ticket it would be a waste. They would ask you to go to poea to process some papers. But the fact that you are not officially an ofw
and there is a chance to be rejected, why would they ask you to do that? Processing papers in the phils is a hassle , it can take time and much effort bec of red tape. They should know that if you are officially been granted a permit You can process the req papers for ofw at the embassy. That is the dilema, as they would like to stay in the phils while waiting for IPA, this is the reason they are having second thoughts to do so.

  16. Hi ben the singaporean citizen can invite a friend in phil?and do you think how many days can stay her friend in sg if she invite here as a visitor?because in the phil immgration so many questions and many documents need to present.

    ReplyDelete

    1. It doesn't matter if the sponsor is a Singaporean Citizen or not. Still they can invite other person. The important thing is that you can justify to the Immigration Officer that you really are going for a tour (showing itinerary or hotel bookings). They will give you a 30-day visit pass and this can be applied for an extension, but is subject for approval by the ICA.

I intend to go to Singapore to visit my partner and look for employment for a week during October. I am then planning to return to Singapore at the start of November on a 30 day social visit pass and get this extended by another 30 days. My partner and I are then going on a two week holiday at the end of December so I will leave just before my 60 days has expired.

My question is will I be able to get another 30 day visit pass to Singapore after my two week holiday? Or should I stay out for 30 days?

    1. Sorry to say that looking for a job in Singapore while on tour is not allowed, but it has been practiced by some people. Luck is the key.

Staying for 60 days in SG and exit for another 30 days is like giving a hint to the immigration officer that you are really looking for a job here, which is likely 50% or less chance of entering SG. Please consider...

  43. Hi Ben, Currently Im holding SVP and my pass will expire on Feb 24th of this month. I already extended 30 days(30+30=60 days i stayed in singapore). Now Can I go to KL on Feb 15 and if i return back after 5 days, whether my pass can be extended for another 30 days? Looking forward for your reply. Thanks in Advance !!

  44. You can go back, but it depends on the Officer if he/she will let you in. Staying in SG in a single visit pass for a long period of time is quite questionable. Sorry to say that luck is your friend this time.

  46. Hi Ben. I'm staying in Singapore holding SVP starting last Nov. 2, 2012. My e-extend was approved, then I exit KL and returned to SG and was given another 30 days, and exit again to Indonesia and was given another 30 days. (30 + 30 + 30 + 30 = 120 days expiring this 23rd of Feb). Can I apply for an E-extend with my new disembarkation card number?

    1. Hi Jon, So sorry, I can't answer your question 'cause this is an immigration matter.

In general, visiting Singapore as tourist always need to have a return ticket with you and they'll grant you 30 days stay. But, you can try to extend you stay in Singapore for another 30 days. Please read my post above.

  53. Hi Ben I have a friend who's tourist visa is expiring over the weekend. They applied online for an extension which got denied so they decided to fly to KL and decided to go the usual route of staying there for a few days and getting an extension stamped upon entry. Thing is wont they be denied entry upon coming back to SG since they were denied online? Does that mean they have to go back to their country/port of origin? How many days until they can return to SG 30 days?

    1. My friend who visited me here was denied online. He visited Malaysia for 1 day and came back to Singapore. He was given 30 days.

We cannot predict the outcome of the Visa Officer's decision. The only thing we can learn is from the outcome of others' experiences.

  54. Hi Ben,

My mom has a multiple entry visa and she arrived here on Feb 28th and got a 30 day stamp. She was recently granted an e-extention till April 29th. The issue is that we booked a short holiday to Bali (non refundable..)from Apr 6th to 9th (for 4 days), hence completely overlooked the 5 day rule. My mom's return ticket to India is on Apr 20, so well within the Apr 29th extension. Question is when she exits for our trip to Bali and comes back in 4 days, will she be rejected entry as she is coming back before 5 days?

I am an Indian.I came to Singapore on a tourist visa. I entered on Feb 9,2013. By the end of 30 days, i applied for extension and it was also approved.Extension is till April 10th. Now i wish to visit Malaysia for 5 days to see my relatives( not in the motive to get further extension). My flight back to India is from Singapore. Will they allow me into Singapore after five days before April 10th.? Please reply as soon as possible.

  57. Hi, Ben.'
I hope you're online now. I would like to ask your opinion on this, here's my scenario, I've already stayed here in SG for 57days now(approved E-xtend) and my visa will be expiring this Sunday. I do want to do the "u-turn" way(KL) tomorrow. Would it be likely that I can be approved if I reason out that I have a family/uncle here in SG? Also is it also required to book my flight back to PH? the fact that I only have 2 days left for my visa... tnx!

    1. Family/Uncle is not only the reason of approving your extension. As far as I know, extension is done once only during your stay in SG. Sorry, I'm not sure about the booking destination, but I'm sure you need a ticket out of SG.

He exited to Indonesia (Batam) and stayed there 3 days and 2 nights with his girlfriend and came back to SG with a 30-day visit pass. After the end of his svp, he went back to Philippines and renewed his passport (i don't know why?), after 3 months, he came back and stayed in SG with a SVP again. 3. My friend went to JB (cheaper than KL) and at the same day he came back to Singapore. He was asked to show his return ticket to Philippines. He was granted 30-day SVP in SG. Then he decided to go back home since he haven't found any job in SG.

      Some were given 14-day SVP.

Exiting Philippines is more strict. You need to register to POEA and other government agencies to go back in SG as a worker.

I can't really give you a definite advice since this is an immigration matter. What I can only do is to tell you what my friends had done. There are risks involved and it's up to you to decide.

  61. Hi Sir Ben,

I have just read your very informative article and i am thanking you for this. My problem is I have my e-Xtend rejected. The first thing I discovered was the passport number in the ICA website is incorrect. I am very sure i entered all the information correctly, reviewing it many times. When i used the status enquiry, it appeared that my passport and DE Card No. do not match. What shall i do? do i have to leave SG before my expiration date or i will appeal on ICA face-to-face, i am worried, i also got a job offer, i am afraid MOM might reject my application since DE Card No./Passport No. in the ICA website do not match in my in-hand documents.

    3. If your SVP is still valid, take the medical exam as soon as possible and get a copy of the doctor's confirmation indicating that the medical report is not ready and has to be faxed over(this is written on your IPA).

Submit your request for extension to the Work Pass Division via fax. Please check in your IPA for the details (At the Medical Examination portion).

      Congrats!!

Sometimes for a week, sometimes for 5 weeks. I never had any problems. I have financies to take care of myself. This time i have my return flight back to Europe, where I live, on 20th April. Now it seems that I have to re-organnize all my trip and return early. Or, could I just have a day trip to JB, and have another 30 days to stay on arrival back ot SG? Will the JB trip be worth it? 1. Try to apply the application first. The result is around 1-2 days after. If unsuccessful, have a tour in JB so they can visit Malaysia also.

If they are given 30-days once they enter SG, yes they can still use the May 11 ticket.

    1. Sorry, I'm not sure if you will be successful this time. It depends on the officer's judgement since you'll be exiting the 2nd time.

The 2-3weeks time depends on your application. Some took less than 2 weeks, mine took more than 3 weeks for the appeal, but is still rejected. I'll post my update on a separate post.

When I previously applied for a social visit they gave her 9 weeks but at immigration they gave her 30 days. Just make an appeal first, there's no harm in doing that. If still rejected, no choice but to exit.

Sorry to say that only the Immigration Officer knows if she'll be admitted back or not. You can try, it's a 50% chance.

    My questions are:
    1. Will I be given a fresh 30 days SVP when I enter SG from Malaysia? This is the first time I'm going to Malaysia.
    2. Should I need to purchase a ticket going back to my country (Phils) prior to my trip to Malaysia, in case the Immigration Officer asks if I

    1. 1. The fresh visa depends on the visa officer on how long you can stay in SG.
      2. You need to show a proof to SG that you are going to leave the country before your visa expires, and that is the air ticket.

This is standard for all tourist, even in other countries, where you need to show your return ticket and also the place of accommodation.

To my surprise, I found a job I really like in MY and got accepted :) The MY immigration refused my SVP extension for another 30days though (I need it while my employer is processing my work documents). I don't know if the fact that I stayed for nearly 60days in SG affected their decision or because I entered the country via land travel. *sigh* They advised me to go back home to PH (which I did) and I'm now waiting for the requisite 5days plus before I enter MY again. I'm positive I won't have problems exiting PH again (my passport has two 1st world visa stamps on it a couple of years back) but I'm just a tad bit nervous with the MY immigration upon my re-entry.

Any suggestions or are you familiar of similar experiences? I still have my original return ticket from SG to PH (which I still haven't used and rebooking it is pretty flexible) but I don't know if it's wiser to just buy an MY to PH return ticket as proof of my intent to exit.

Even if you're not with the immigration, what do you think is the success probability of my re-entry?

    -Martha

  89. Hello Ben,

I had a 30 days SVP and it expired a month ago. I went to Thailand for a week and extended my SVP for 30 days again. Now I want to stay here for one more month and is it possible to use e-extend service or should I go out of Singapore again? or should I just go to ICA in person?

    Thanks!
    -Tim

  91. Hello Ben,

Just wanna ask if is it possible for me and my son to go ICA personally and stay longer here(possible 90days), since his father is a Singaporean National and unfortunately my son was born in PH due to some circumstances(Divorce is on process)

    Thanks!

    1. Apply for an extension of 89 days through online first. Then if Rejected, make an appeal in person at the ICA together with your local sponsor with supporting documents.

  93. Hi Ben,

I am here in singapore since aug 14 and my visit will expire on sep 13. I applied an extension for 30 days but i mistyped my name. It was approved a whike ago with a wrong spelling of name, but i already got a ticket to indonesia as a back up plan if ever the extension is disapproved. I am planning to just withdraw the application by not paying the required amount. Question is, first, will there be a problem if i pursue the extension under a wrong name? And second, will there be a problem if on the future i apply again for extension since i withdrawn the first application?

    Thanks in advance!

    1. Wrong name only means that you're not that person. In my opinion, you should inform ICA about it so they can see your passport number and the disembarkation/embarkation card for comparison. This will also prevent future dispute on your documents...Again, this is only my opinion.

Sorry, I have no idea for the withdrawal of application, to be honest...

  97. Hi ben,

Both me and husband are Q EP holders. I applied dependent pass for my 4 month old baby - rejected. Applied for a 30 day extension via ICA online - rejected as well! my baby's visit pass expires 28th sept.. Do u think we can go to JB on Monday and get any sort of extension? We plan to only go to JB a few hours. if we do thaton 16th sept, will my baby be allowed back into singapore?

    1. My friends who have relatives that have their visa expiring, they go out to Malaysia for a day trip or to LEGOLAND. They were able to get another 30 days extension.

I don't think they will let you in and your baby will be left in Malaysia alone. Just my thoughts...

    2. Meaning, if my baby is not allowed in, then they won't allow me in too. Great. Not that we will leave him anyway.

Sigh. We just want to have more time to make an appeal for both DP and/or extension of visit pass. We can't be flying baby to and from Brunei every 30 days. Stressful. Surely, this country's laws cannot be that cruel - babies do have the right to stay with their mums esp when they are breastfeeding.

      Exasperating.

Anyway, hope this works. Since it worked for your friend's relatives.

      Thanks for your reply.

    3. I think I misread your reply.

Why don't you think they will let me in?

Should i cancel my JB trip then?

    4. Sure, you're a Q Epass holder and you have a privilege to exit/enter SG anytime. But the baby has a single visit only. Do you think the immigration officer won't allow the baby to go in even for one day to SG? I'm sure that he will not find jobs here and will not overstay, right? :D

Maybe...it's maybe the worst case is your baby will be given few days to enter SG until the return ticket date.

You can read through some of my comments above for other circumstances.

  98. To all my readers, please remember that Singapore is not our home. We have no right to ask something from them just for our own benefit.

We should be thankful that we have been invited to visit their doorstep even for a day or work for years.

Let's say...someone stayed in your home or work as a maid, gardener, driver. Do you want them to ask more from you and questions you if you don't give what they ask for?

Whatever the host country provides you, please accept it. The only word we can say is "HOPE".

  100. Hi Ben.

Need advice, I am currently waiting for my S pass result and I need to go JB this saturday and come back on Sunday but my social visit pass expires on 29 Oct. I wonder if I still can come in Singapore and have the 30 days Social visit pass? I am an Indonesian and I am in Singapore for more than 3 years and graduated from local poly as well. I have been in and out for months and in sept I went out of Singapore almost every weekend. If I were to give some reason for me to stay in Singapore for another 30 days, what is your suggestion regarding to my reasoning for me to stay? Thanks Ben. Hope to hear from you soon.

  101. Hi,
Need to know ... I am a EP holder my parents are visiting me in Singapore on a social visit pass - 30 days validity (although the visa is a 24 month multiple entry visa) - 01-nov-2013.

lets say if i take my parents to Malaysia on 27 27-Nov-2013 for a 7 day trip and then back to singapore on 03-dec-2013 will they get another 30 days of stay in singapore?

    1. HI SP, for you, there will be no problem once you exit Malaysia since you have the multiple entry visa.

As for your parents, I can only relate the situation to some of my friends and acquaintances...they usually accompany their relative to Malaysia even for a day and comes back in SG with another 30-day visa.

Take note, there is no 100% assurance here because some are rejected and some are not. But, since your parents are here for a tour, in my opinion, they will be allowed to go in SG for another 30 days.

Due to the recent changes my EP has been downgraded to S Pass. My 6 years old has been granted a Student pass while my Wife Long Term visit Pass,

but my big problem now is what to do with my 6 months old son, I can try asking locals to sponsor him for 89 days extension but after that what else can we do?

I really got a big head ache now can you please advice us on what to do? thank you very much

    1. If they are no longer holding a dependant pass and you intend to extend your baby for 89 days, the only way after these measures is to bring your baby back to your country.

Then, reapply for a dependant pass for them again. But this is only possible if your salary is above S$4,000. Then, if rejected, re-appeal...

  104. Hi ben! I applied online for an extension of my social visit pass yesterday and got rejected. Nov-22-2013 will be my last day here in singapore.. Before my visit will expire, My gf is planning an exit to Malaysia, just stay for a few hours and come back to singapore. Would that be ok?

My only concern is, i saw the condition upon applying an online extension and The fourth condition stated: you will not return to singapore within 5 days from the departure date of your current trip.

Does this mean i cannot simply stay for a few hours in Malaysia and come back to singapore like after 2 hours to get another 30 days visit pass?

Hope to hear from you soon.. Thank you very much...

  105. Hi ben, when you say 50 50 chances.. Do you mean 50% chance you'll get an extension? Or 50% chance you can come back to sg with or without extnsion for 30 days? Or 50% chance malaysia will hold you and deport you to philippines?

You have a return ticket in this situation, and planning on staying just a few hours in JB..

    1. 50% chance getting into SG (w/ validity date of return ticket to PH, 14days or 30days visit pass), or 50% can not get in to SG, will purchase ticket in Malaysia direct to Philippines.

These are all based on my friends'/acquaintances' experiences only. This will depend on the Officer in Charge. Please read my Disclaimer above.

    2. Hi, I am not familiar with the e-visa that you're having...as far as I know, the visa is issued once you arrive in Singapore, and that is Day 1...now, if they give you 30 days or 14 days visa, then you can stay according to the visa stamped at your passport.

    1. HI, you can apply for an extension first, this is only done online. Ask your friend to help you extend your visa...if your extension is rejected, you need to exit Singapore.

Some of my friends go to Johor Bharu and come back at the same day and were given another 30 days. Others goes to Batam, Indonesia for 3 days, and given 30 days as well...This is what I know, but please read my DISCLAIMER above.
